Onaya Science

Evidence-based inquiry & transcendental understanding.

For nearly a decade the team has operated as the not-for-profit Onaya Science, a group of multidisciplinary researchers with a wealth of experience exploring the effects of psychedelic plant medicines on mental health and wellbeing.

Through our established links with international collaborators and honed methodologies, we provide expert research consultation to those looking to embark on their own research journey - from interested individuals to fully-fledged retreat centers and clinics.

We also provide specific expertise on conducting research in collaboration with Indigenous communities in a meaningful and respectful way.

What the research says

Through our sister non-profit organisation Onaya Science, we have spent the last decade exploring the effects of ayahuasca and Amazonian plant medicines using epigenetic, neuroimaging, physiological and psychological measures.

The preliminary evidence published in scientific journals suggests that plant medicines have potential to treat a range of psychological problems, including depression, anxiety, addiction and PTSD.

Research in the heart of the Amazon rainforest

Onaya Science’s main research hub is the Riosbo Research Center, based in the heart of the Allpahuayo-Mishana National Reserve near Iquitos in Peru. The team of neuroscientists, therapists and researchers works in collaboration with the Ayahuasca Foundation and Indigenous Shipibo healers to design and conduct studies into ceremonial ayahuasca, upholding their voice at every stage.

International network of collaborators

The Onaya team has formed strong collaborative links with leading organisations, researchers and practitioners in the field. Leveraging this vast knowledge base, we have been able to partner with global organisations to further our understanding of the potential benefits for different populations, from military veterans to athletes with brain injuries.
